Volunteerism & Salkantay

 Recommended Guidebooks

 Other Good Books

 Our Selected Texts

Student travelers are expected to do some group reading and preparation for the trip.  I am recommending that we select one text on culture and one novel to read in anticipation of our trip.  The ones to the left are highly recommended and focus on the types of communities we will be visiting.

We will likely have meetings every few weeks to discuss our readings and other ideas in anticipation of:

  • challenges of volunteerism
  • how national politics have impacted local communities
  • the role of religion and history in contemporary custom
  • major historical events in Peru

In addition, travelers should anticipate group reflection meetings during the trip, informal gatherings to discuss our experiences, two during the volunteerism and two during the trek.

Finally, I anticipate that travelers will journal or otherwise write about some aspect of their experiences for later publication on our web page and for the schools and Royal Oak community.  Because of the nature of our trip, I do not anticipate any online access during our travels.
