Passports & Immunizations

Volunteerism & Salkantay

  • Passports -- Get them now!  Even though normal processing time is 4-6 weeks, we have seen 15 week durations at times.
  • Immunizations -- No required vaccines.  CDC recommends Yellow Fever, but only for low altitude areas where we will not be traveling. However, definitely check these:
    • All routine vaccines up to date (measles, flu, etc.)
    • Hepatitus A

 Some Basic Group Safety Rules

I will be instituting some basic safety rules during our travel.  I urge all travelers not to dispute these but to treat them seriously for the safety of all of us.  We would prefer not to test the talents of the Peruvian health clinics or police.
  • We will stay together as a group for the duration of the trip.  Solo adventures, even by adults in the group, are not permitted.
  • Drink no non-bottled water without the express permission of one of our group leaders.  Double-check bottled water to be sure that the plastic cap is secure.  Do not drink from pre-opened water bottles.
  • Do not climb rocks or hills without a guide present.  This is especially true of Huayna Picchu next to Machu Picchu.
  • Be aware in urban areas!
    • All passports and airline tickets will be held by Mr. Chisnell through the trip.
    • Do not carry purses or other open bags in the cities.
    • Stay together and watch out for each other in marketplaces.
    • Do not use credit cards or ATM cards in open or public locations.
  • Be aware in rural areas!
    • No one should take night walks away from our work area, whether alone or in groups.
    • If we are in separate work groups, always have a 2-way radio with you.
    • We will visit Sacsahuayman ruins outside Cuzco only as a group.

I will be revising this list as the trip approaches.
