Okay, so these aren't all my favorites, but in response to people telling me they aren't good for me. . .
Peanut Butter -- Supposedly just high in fat and calories, five recent major studies show that reduces risks for coronary disease--> lower total cholesterol, lower LDL (bad cholesterol), and lower triglycerides. And these benefits happen without weight gain, largely because it satisfies hunger more than, say, a stupid rice cake. And trans fats are minimal in 1-2 tablespoons a day.
Eggs -- Supposedly high in cholesterol, eggs also have one of the highest levels of choline which promotes brain function. Better, they are cheap and are loaded with protein and other nutrients; at only 75 calories each, that's a good deal.
Coffee -- Supposedly valuable only for the caffeine buzz, the average cup also has 100s of other chemicals. Caffeine improves memory in adults, and that small amounts of coffee through the day improves alertness and overall performance in brain function. Regular drinking can reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes, a disease growing quickly in the US.
Mushrooms -- Supposedly free of any real nutritional value, mushrooms boost immune systems and reduce the risk of breast and prostate cancer (at least one of which everyone should be concerned about). Fungus is the only food that contains certain kinds of antioxidants as well. High in potassium which lowers blood pressure, the mushroom has more potassium than an orange.
Dark chocolate -- Not true of white and milk chocolates, dark chocolate in particular has several health benefits if taken in moderation, since the calorie issue is big. It doesn't increase blood pressure as high as real butter, for one; since it has little to no milk which tends to negate the health benefits, the antioxidants in dark chocolate also help reduce heart disease (if you're prone to it). None of this means that replacing healthier foods with dark chocolate is a good idea, but the benefits are clear. As a piece of trivia, too, dark chocolate has 10x the calories of an apple. Youch.
