| | 9 | 5/19/2010 5:20 PM | | What if you were King? Just out of curiosity and fun, what if you were King? What would you do in Arthur's shoes? How would you manage your Kingdom? Finances? Diplomacy? Army? Upkeep? Public Order? etc. | |
| | | 9 | 5/19/2010 5:08 PM | | Would you go on a quest? We were talking about in class the past couple of days about how all these knights went on a quest even though they knew they would fail and they knew who would get the grail. I'm wondering if any of you would go anyways? I know I definitely wouldn't. i don't understand why they would except that they would be honored, but they'd be dead. I rather not die... | |
| | | 9 | 5/15/2010 9:34 PM | | cross? What does the cross mean to you? To me it repersents hope and forgiveness. | |
| | | 0 | 5/15/2010 9:29 PM | | Pagan Beliefs In the story we have learned that in the end of the book the old ways have left with the death of Arthur and everyone else who was a practicer of the old ways. so my question to you guys is why did Malory write this book about the the old ways vs. the New ways and Christianity. | |
| | | 6 | 5/15/2010 11:01 AM | | What does Merlin represent? I want to know what everyone else thinks what Merlin represents as a character as a whole? I have an idea that he does represent some prophetic figure like was mentioned in class and in the book, but is he a good character or could he ultimately become a deceptive and kniving character? | |
| | | 10 | 5/15/2010 10:54 AM | | Merlin and the old ways. In class, Chisnell asked us why we felt that Merlin was helping Arthur and the other characters in the story. I will admit that I am not particularly far in the novel, but I have a guess at the answer to this question. It is clear that the Old Ways, or the pre-christian beliefs, are quickly disappearing in Malory's world. Merlin is obviously a practitioner of these beliefs, being a prophet of the old ways. My prediction, is that Merlin is helping the characters for one of two reasons: Either in an attempt to preserve the old ways, or, in an attempt to hasten their end. Any one else have any thoughts on the matter? | |

| | | 3 | 5/15/2010 10:41 AM | | Gwenhwyfar vs. Morgana One question that Chisnell brought to out attention was whether or not Morgana and Gwenhwyfar fill a similar role in Arthur. Now , as I am not very far in the novel, the prediction i have is based solely on my pre-existing knowledge of the legend, which may or may not be accurate. From what I know, Gwenhwyfar is not so much of the innocent and pure female archetype, and falls somewhere in between that and the morally reprehensible temptress archetype. Morgana could be argued similarly, while she may appear to clearly be the evil female character, I sense that she too is somewhere in between the two roles. Not only do the two share an archetypal role, but both of them could be blamed for the downfall and failure of Arthur, Morgana for actively sabotaging his goals, and Gwenhwyfar for her betrayal. Yet another similarity is that, to an extent, both characters have a close relationship to Arthur, he slept with both, and he has a child through both as well. To me, it appears that both of these characters are fairly alike, maybe not on the surface, but on a deeper level, and I expect to see more of this as we get farther into the novel. | |
