Feelings on your Mother?
Today Mr. Chisnell brought up the question why is Hamlet so frustrated that his mother remarried.  He has so many other reasons to be angry, his dad died, he lost the right to the throne, and his uncle is now his new step-dad.  Throught all this thought, Hamlet is most angry that his mom remarried.  Now I could never imagine if my father where to pass, me being jealous that my mom remarried to another man.  If anything I would be happy for her that she is happy.  Mabye since times where different, these kids view there parents differently, but I'm not sure.  What do you think, are Hamlets feeling justified and how would you feel about your mother acting like Gertrude?

Hamlet Changes Ideas
Hamlet has believed, up until the end of act II, 100% in the Ghost which visited him as his father. But as the actors he play a play for him, he begins to question the truth of the ghost. Is his flawed madness a tactic to figure himself out, or will him destroy him? Why does he question himself?

Hamlet like Romeo and Juliet
The ending gave me the strongest connection between the two books, and I know its most likely because they are both tragedies. Now as I go back and look at it I see how truly similar they are. It might just be because of the time the book was based around, but Romeo and Hamlet where both princes. In both books there was a argument between royal families. There is a similarly strong love factor between the two main characters. There are magical postionous potions in both stories. And in the end, most everyone does, for each other in a way. Play with it.

Ok, i read act 5. And this is a probably a stupid question...but did Hamlet die? Cause to me it seems like he was killed at the end. Kind of like a trial type killing.

Hamlet in high school...
What kind of kid would hamlet be if he were in high school?

my guess is that he would be that emo kid who everyone thinks is weird and doesnt want to talk to, and he would probably get beat up a lot because he seems to have too quick and sharp of a tongue for his lack of manlyness.

Just thought this would be a fun topic, enjoy.

Psychosis
My theory, based on the information that I've read so far, is that Hamlet isn't crazy because crazy people don't know they're crazy. If Hamlet was psychotic he wouldn't be thinking that him seeing a Ghost is wierd, he would just be so enveloped in the hillucination that he wouldn't be warning his friends that he might act kind of crazy.

Hamlet's Plan
After the scene where the actors come in and act out the play, Hamlet comes up with a plan to have them recreate the scene of his fathers death and watch and see if Claudius reacts to it, then he will know for sure that it was Claudius who killed his father and he will act.
But how will the actors portray the death of old Hamlet? will they have Claudius pour the poison in his ear like they showed in the film clip? because then Claudius will surely react to that, claiming that its offensive and an affront on his honor and all that. Or will they portray the death as old hamlet being bitten by a poisonous snake....in freezing cold denmark...?

The death of Ophelia
So basically she fell into a creek, and just kept singing and smiling as her clothes got waterlogged and dragged her down and she drowned....Seriously?!?!?

She was so demented and out of her mind that she kept singing and smiling as she was drowning in the river? I find that a little hard to believe in reality.

Can people really be so distraught that they dont even notice or care that they are drowning? Human survival instinct should be stronger than any concious feelings shouldnt they?

Not only do they have streetfighter names, but they're also wierd characters.  They seem to be pretty big suck ups throughout the play, especially and the beginning of Act 3 Scene 3 when they're telling the king how directly important he is to the state of the lives of everyone in his kingdom. And I guess those was differn' times, but it's still a little creepy, especially when they're talking about hamlet, who's supposed to be their friend, is this blight on Denmark that threatens the king. Chiz said they based plays off these guys. I can see why they're pretty weird.

Ophelia<3<3
How is it that Hamlet can dirty talk with Ophelia in front of everyone? Before the play, he's talking about what a 'fair thought' it would be to 'lie between a maiden's legs.' I guess mom's to busy running around with his new step-dad to discipline him, and I doubt that he, being a prince, was ever really disciplined much anyway. It's weird how Ophelia just sits there and takes it too. I guess they's was different times. And the way he looks at relationships in general, like in the play that the players preform, is just pretty weird.

The wize clown
Act 5 Scene 1 Page 101

It was interesting to first read this scene and have the grave diggers being referred to as clowns. I figured it probably meant something different from what it does today. Anyway the clown is the most Amazing character in this play. He speaks simple wisdom and it is no surprise that Hamlet has many questions for him. On page 105 were the clown tells Hamlet of Hamlet being mad is very funny and probably awkward for Hamlet. The clown is a very confident individual. He has his own perspective and isn't intimidated by Hamlet's words and deep questions on life. Hamlet is clearly impressed as well by the clown. In scene 2 Hamlet is continuing to us the clown's word "methought".

Any views on the wise clown??

So that incident in Act 3 Scene 1 Where Hamlet to tells Ophelia the best thing for her to do is to go to a nunnery....Is never explained its the missing piece to determine Hamlet's mindset. Hamlet wasn't upset at Ophelia his anger for his mother was being placed on Ophelia. Agree or Disagree?

Queen-"Im not a Hoe"
People continue to say that Gertrude and Claudius's married occurred very quickly considering the death of her husband. Gertrude has even been called a hoe for her actions. She shouldn't be viewed this way people deal with grief in different ways, its possible that her way of dealing with it is honoring her husband's death and moving on. Hamlet's "ghost father" even told Hamlet not not harm her and that she would be judged at the end as all people are. agree or disagree?

Hamlet is weak...
Why didnt Hamlet just overthrow Claudius when he returned? Proclaim to the people that Claudius was just a steward and can only be such, because if Hamlet is old enough to rule and his Father passed away, he is the rightful king, not Claudius. So why didnt Hamlet do this right away? If he were to try it now it is way too late, Claudius is already settled in and the way the people see it, Hamlet is too. But if Hamlet had tried to oust Claudius as soon as he got back, then the people would see him as a strong leader taking control of what is rightfully his.

So why didnt Hamlet do it? Why the Delay?
TabooUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Taboo
I think that it's pretty safe to say that sexual relations between offspring and parent are considered taboo, then why would Hamlet and Oedipus Rex have that as one of their underlying tones? I was thinking that it was one of those things that we like to watch from an entertainment point of view, but make sure that it doesn't effect our day to day lives. Pretty much the opposite of something like passing a bowel movement, everyone does it, but no one wants to talk about it. We love the scandal but don't like when it actually effects us. I still just think that it's strange that something that is considered so extremely wrong and taboo can be taken pretty lightly in a play or another form of entertainment. I'm not sure about this though, maybe people were stricken by Shakespeare's boldness back in the day, but I have a feeling that if there was an outcry against this play, we wouldn't be embracing it as much today... So are we okay with it because secretly we all have these feelings? I don't think that that's the answer either. Freud was a smart guy, no doubt, but I just don't think that every man is born with a desire to be the alpha male over his father and thus mate with his mother, simply because we don't. I don't hear of everyone son passively undermining their father in hopes of tearing down their dominance, it just seems like there's no really pin point to find to this question.

Distrust
During Act II, more or less, I noticed a big reoccurring theme, it was that no one in the book, Hamlet, seems to trust each other. For example, Polonious sent his son to france but she still has to watch someone to look after him, Reynaldo, to keep him on the correct path. Polonious also distrust Hamlet with his daughter. Hamlet Distrusts his mother/ aunt and father/ uncle and at the same time is mad at them. Lastly Ophelia distrusts Hamlet mostly because her father told her too. As the book plays out, I wonder if these distrusts began to change.

Maybe Hamlet the not dead one is just seeing stuff. In the movie he sees and hears a ghost no one else can see. Maybe this is signs of skitzophenia. or just plain crazy. Maybe he creates this ghost in his head to justifie a way to kill claudius and gain the crown

during scene III, laertes seem to be playing the role of the protective older brother. He's trying to warn ophelia about how hamlet may love her now but he will eventually only use her in the long run. its sweet how hes wanting to protect ophelia from hamlet but it doesnt know when to drop it.
if shes about to get engaged to hamlet, shouldnt she be able to make her own decision with out her brothers help? i feel like instead of having ophelia let laertes bash on hamlet, she should stand up to her brother and let him know that hamlet is the man she is going to marry and to get over it.

loyalty
This is a pretty big theme in all of the books we've read.Oedipus was loyal to the prophecy, God created man to be loyal to his word, Dante follows Virgil so that he can better understand and be loyal to God, and K.'s lack of loyalty to the Law gets him killed. Hamlet gives a pretty weird loyalty speech after the Ghost tells him how he was murdered and that hamlet needs to avenge him. Top of page 26:"I'll wipe away all trivial fond records, all saws of books, all forms, all pressures past, and thy commandment alone shall live within the book and volume of my brain, unmix'd with baser matter... Now to my word. It is 'Adieu, adieu, remember me.' I have sworn't." When I first read this I thought Hamlet was some nut taking his destiny too seriously, but now I think I understand why he'd want to wipe his brain clean. Maybe when you're raised like he was to think that the only way to salvation was through the righteousness of the church, you'd hold your father to an undeniable godlike standard. I'm sure Hamlet saw his dad's word as a sort of pass to heaven. The way Hamlet describes his loyalty in this speech really makes him seem a little nuts to me, though. It definitely make the whole "Hamlet's a nut who fabricated his fathers ghost to justify his true intentions of killing Claudius and being at his mothers side" theory believable. And if he isn't hallucinating and the speech is just him being loyal to his father/the church/god, then the speech seems almost like it's caricaturing loyalty to a christian state. Like his "wiping the books of his mind" metaphor means that his following his father and honoring royal blood is more important than the bible, or "the books."

Short Monomyths
I'm pretty sure that I have a good understanding of the Monomyths, escically in long films.  I can pick outs all of the points and changes in long films like The Matrix, Back to the Future, Indian Jones, The Terminator, and other big movies.  However, with these shorter films, the points we are looking for come so much quicker and are out of order, they pass before I can acutally realize them.  The film we did for our quiz was esceically hard for me because it was so out of order and I had no clue what was going on.  Either way, I like the concept of the monomyth and belive that I have a good "ok" understanding of it.

Hamlet's relationship with Polonius is very odd. Usually a guy who's trying to get a girl will do all they can to stay on her parents good side whether they're below in status or not. This being so why is Hamlet so insultingly rude to Polonius acting as if he didn't know him and referring to him as an fishmonger? On page 44 toward the middle Hamlet even mocks him "My lord, I have news to tell you."

so through out the play, we get to hear hamlet whine and moan about how his pure mother married his uncle. even though i hate his complaining, hamlet makes a very good point. when gertrude married claudius, she broke so many many rules. for starters incest-eww. it also makes you wonder how well gertrude 'knew' claudius before her huband died. if her husband died, she should be in mourning, not whoring it up with a new husband only four weeks later. it gives everyone a background feeling that gertrude was sleeping with claudius before her husband died. i havent read the story before but i feel like she also had to be involved with the previous kings death otherwise its a bit weird that shes so nochalant about his death.

St**id Shakespeare
I really just wanted everyone to know I didn't vote for this book, and can't stand Shakespeare.  I don't understand why we read his books in the Shakespeare Language, I know it would be much easier if the books where translated into modern english so students could read the book and actually enjoy it!!  I do recall reading Romeo and Juliet in 9th grade and it had the great love meaing of it, but I was not really into that type of reading at all and had trouble following along.  Hopefully Mr. Chiz can make shakespeare more appealing to me this time around with Hamlet.

"Why, then 'tis none to you; for there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so. To me [Denmark] is a prison" pg 40. What's going on with Hamlet? Breaking into prose, grabbing aphelia, and now disbelieving that anything has meaning. There's a lot to swallow in this act, but it's definitely safe to say Hamlet's going through some changes. That line I posted up thar took me pretty off guard though. There's a little bit earlier too when Polinus asks hamlet what he's reading and he responds: "Words, words, words." Sure, he said that to Polonius so it's not really a big deal, he's probably just pissed of because the old man won't let him near his daughter, but he said that stuff about 'nothing being good or bad' to his friends. I dunno, weird stuff.

Little Red Riding Hood
I wanted to make sure that I was not the only person that was truley disturbed by the Little Red Riding Hood film we viewed in class.  I mean the storry of Little Red Riding Hood is taken as such a great fairytale or what you might want to call it, but the origin of it is so inapproarite for the targeted age.  I think that it actually sent a stronger message then that of the new story.  The message of exploring a womens sexuality, just in a very creepy way.  The new version which was chaged my the brothers grimme is targeted for younger kids, explaining them not to travel alone and shows ther certain concquesnces.

claudius: the real king?
okay so i was thinking about hamlets situtation. he was supposed to be the king of denmark after his fathers death but of course claudius married gertrude and hes now the present king. with this, i think hamlet can pull a king henry VIII
if you dont know what im talking about, king henry wanted to divorce his wife catherine of aragon to so he sould wed someone else. his divorce was granted because he pulled some line from the bible that says you cannot lay with your brothers wife.
if hamlet just presented this to the courts, it would dethrone claudius and then make hamlet the rightful king of denmark. plus not to mention, i believe this would hurt claudius more than actually killing him. it would take away what he yearned for the most and i think that would also make hamlet able to avange his fathers death in a way.

Claudius as Prince Hamlets Father Figure
So King Hamlets dies and the next thing you know, his wife is already married to his brother. Use some common scenes and figure it out. Anyways, Prince Hamlet comes home from the school of Wittenberg after his father had died and he is having trouble accepting the death. This same time, Claudius marries Gertrude. As Prince Hamlets is grieving over his fathers death, Claudius actually steps in as a new type of father figure to him. Not only does he tell him that he hopes Hamlets can see him a his father, but he also tells him that he does not think inappropriate to be sad and cry to long about his fathers death. I can't understand how Hamlet is just taking this from his uncle. To talk to him like that is absurd. He practically told him t get over with his father, and fast you wimp. I can definitely see why Hamlet is out to get Claudius in this book, I would be too.

Ok...so i have to rant about this family. OMG!! this family is somewhat insane. I mean i really and truly believe that Gertrude was having an affair with the king. Otherwise she wouldnt have married him.....she would have married her son. I mean that is what they did back then. And i beilieve that hamlet has every right to be mad at his mother. i would be pretty pissed off too, if i found out that my mother secretly got married to my uncle when i was away. I also believe that the uncle...whos name i forgot at the moment....should respect Hamlet. Where clearly Hamlet is next in line. ANd the uncle should learn how to respect the dead. Idk...thats the end of my somewhat useless rant. Feel free to rant as well.

Hamlet Monologue
I'm quite stricken by what Hamlet says here, he says, "So excellent a king, that was to this hyperion to a satyr, so loving to my mother that he might not beteem the winds of heaven visit her face too roughly." This is an extreme idolization of his father. He's saying that he was so strong and excellent that he could have to stopped even the winds of heaven. You can tell that he's also extremely upset at his mother for seeming to have taken this for granted.

Deal with the Devil
I by no means know the story of Hamlet. I'm just thinking that right now I'm suspecting that Hamlet will make some sort of deal with the Devil, or a Demon. We were talking about how Ghosts in Shakespeare's time were thought of as demons trying to use images of those past to do evil biddings. So I'm just thinking that it would be a good twist in the play if Hamlet turned away from the world so much that he actually make some sort of pact with some evil figure to get his Step father killed, possibly his mother too. I'm just basing this off of the fact that he said that there wasn't something right about his fathers Ghost, and I believe is says that he's basically going to get to the bottom of this, and then before he said "How weary, stale, flat and unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world!" I know it's a far fetched idea but I think that it's something that would fit good as a temptation.

Ghost + God = ??
After the Ghost leaves they talk about it a bit and Marcellus says something that interests me. He says, ", why such impress of shipwrights, whose sore task does not divide the Sunday from the week." So he's saying that it's bad that people have to work so hard that they don't have time to attend Church on Sundays, but how can you see a Ghost and then still believe in God? Dante's Inferno is the foundation, for Christians, of what happens to you after you die, I don't remember reading anything about Ghosts or why someone wouldn't be received by any plain of existence...

So when we have Horatio, Marcellus, and Bernardo sitting and waiting for Fortinbras's ghost to arrive I find it weird that they wouldn't see the ghost and run to their officers or something and be like, "Dude, you know that King we thought was dead?" "Yea" "He's dead and haunting our watch! It's f***ing insane!" In stead they yell at it (probably not smart to yell at something that can walk through walls...).

Feelings
So apparently Ghosts now have feelings, which might make sense, but is still kind of odd... The usual thought behind why there might be ghosts is because they have unfinished business here that they have to attended to. So I think that it's really funny that a ghost would be like, "Fine! Be that way a**holes I'm gonna go drift over here!"
