For our various musings and ramblings!

| | 1 | 1/24/2010 3:29 PM | Dante's, The Inferno Wiki I thought this was by far the most fun assignment all semester. It gave of us, as students and as regular, goofy teens, to state and share our understanding of the book. I think it helped make things clearer too. I didnt understand the purpose of the circles until I actually had to think of my own ideas for sins and where they belong in Dante's metaphorical Hell. This assignment helped me understand the book a lot more. It also taught me another way to understand literature; put it in your own terms first, then relate it to things of today's times. everything is the same, just in different terms of depth of meaning. | | | 6 | 1/24/2010 3:21 PM | proof?? faith= belief w/o proof. Then why do people go to church?? why do people pray and ask for things from god?? just to know hes there?? that is proof, which means they have no faith. so who are the real believers?? do they ask for some sort of proof too?? this just confuses me, beacause everyone always says they have so much faith at church.. then why are they there?? | | | 5 | 1/24/2010 1:36 PM | Temptation #1. I think alot of people give into the stone--> bread temptation. The basis was if god turned the stones into bread then his people would follow him. He said no. But many people fall into this temptation in kind if the same sense. People give each other things to keep them coming back. It happens in relationships, friendships, and parent-child relationships all the time. Some parents just hand off money so they can keep a good relationship with their child/children. Guys give girls gifts hoping it will keep them from breaking up with them. Friends give each other things, or do things for them just so they will stay friends. It happens all the time. Everybody gives in to this temptation at least once in their life, even if they don't realize it. | | | 3 | 1/24/2010 12:59 PM | Jesus's Message Is mankind too weak for Jesus's Message?
Is manking too weak? Are we so weak that we can't handle the freedom that Jesus preached we have? Is mankind better off in chains?
Well. If you look at all of history, it's been a struggle for freedom and liberty. It's in our instincts to be free, to provide for ourselves in order to survive. If someone else tells us how to live, then what purpose do we have? So as monarchies and the like attempted to seize all power from the people for themselves, they were starving the populations thrist for individual freedom. Then came revolutions and such to break those chains. But as people became more free, they eventually became weaker and less organized, and turned to people such as Stalin and Hitler to lead them. Why has humanity struggled with this for so long, and can it ever be solved? Is humanity strong enough to handle the Thruth?
| | | 9 | 1/24/2010 12:51 PM | Growing Up With Religion I feel like we spent a lot of time in class talking about religions, but we never had a specific discussion on what we personally believed. The more we learned in this class, the more I was able to doubt and question Christianity and Catholicism. Esentially, it all came down to the same question I always ask myself:
Is easier for a person to believe in God if they were raised in the environment? Are there any of you guys who weren't raised to believe in God but do?
I was raised to equally respect all religions, but I never went to church or was taught that a certain God was the one to follow. So for me, accepting a specific God and believing in him/her/it is VERY hard. | | | 7 | 1/24/2010 11:44 AM | big and small. Satans misunderstanding of the smaller angels got me to thinking. He was confused at why they did not fall to the temptation to overcome God, but he did?? The class said it was because they didnt have the same perspective as him. But i think its because God trusted satan, hence the reason he was a bigger angel. But God watched and controlled the other angels so they werent able to overcome him. But God trusted Satan as a bigger angel and did not watch him as closely. Bet he has his ties on them now :). | | | 9 | 1/24/2010 11:18 AM | Can i just say... I have always had questions on being raised in a christian church but i let myself believe it al because its what i was told growing up. After this semester (even though nobody ever put it this way) i feel like that christians and the bible are realy nieve and dont really make sense. It kind of creeps me out because now i feel like if i keep believing the bible and christian faith ide be questioning it my whole life but im scared not to because if I'm wrong im going to hell and i dont want to go there right!? lol. I know this wasn't his point at all but now im a bit discombobulated. I enjoy learning about my faith as well as others but there is just so many its hard to choose right!? Im really enjoying exploring all these faiths and learning about the different perspectives I'm getting so much more out of this class then i expected to :) | | | 7 | 1/24/2010 11:00 AM | No Absolutes Okay so I wanted to bring this up on here. I know we have touched on it in class.
Some people believe there is no abolutes in life. Thinking about this brought me back to a conversation I had one day with someone. Basically the conversation was that there has to be absolutes in life. If there isn't any absolutes than how do we know we are really alive on the planet called earth, and breathing the thing called air. In a situation, where there are two sides of the story, there has to be one side that is the truth even if it is not mentioned. What happened happened. The "Truth" still exists even though no one mentioned in.
Thoughts, questions, and/or concerns? | | | 18 | 1/24/2010 10:47 AM | Disney get on your A game. So we decided Disney has a social responsibility. It;s to send a message to our society. The message they do send, well its pretty much crap. They create alternate fantasy lands, where verything is perfect and love is perfect and familys are all happy, and peace exists. But the only thing is, nobody has a problem with this. Everyone wants them to create these lies. It keeps dreams and hope alive. People feed of of these things, the lies that drown out all the bad things in their life. Disney has the ability to reshape our society in stories and on screen, and frankly I think they take advantage of it. But nobody complains, because it brings happiness to them. | | | 7 | 1/24/2010 10:43 AM | help!! Don't people become angels by dying and going to heaven?? But if satan was an angel first then became satan, but adam and eve were the first people, then who created satan?? and who created all the people who are now angels?? because adam and eve were the first people God created. so is there a higher power or other creator?? im lost.. | | | 13 | 1/24/2010 10:24 AM | The Doll Study The doll study was an experiment conducted with dolls using a chosen group of elementary girls of black and white races. In this experiment the girls were showed a black baby doll and a white one and then asked which one was prettier or better to play with. After answering this question they were asked which one looked like them. Majority of the girls from both races chose the white doll as the pretty one and the black doll as the ugly one.
This shows have the status of young children being colorblind no longer exist and how racial stereotypes and being established in children so young. | | | 8 | 1/24/2010 9:18 AM | Thoughts & Regrets Hello All,
Has anyone had any last thoughts about our class, I know that many have a love hate relationship with it, but I thik we all got SOMETHING out of the course.....let us discuss it!
Sleeping D. Thinker | | | 1 | 1/18/2010 12:25 PM | 30 Days: Men vs. Women There were a few things that I found interesting about the men and women of Islamic culture that I did not know.
1. Women are not seen, so much, as inferior to men, but more protected by their men. The women wear the long robes and face scarfs so that other men are not aroused by another man's wife's skin showing. The men are just protective more than dominant.
2. The women stand behind the men during prayer, so the men can focus on connecting with God, and not be distracted by a women bending over in front of them. I always thought it was because the men thought they were dominant. Now I see, that Muslims take prayer and religion very seriously.
3. The women, not only the husband, feel uncomfortable being alone with other men without the presense of the man of the house. I thought that the husbands were the ones who didn't want thier wives to be alone with other men because they saw women as possessions, but i see that the women are more than that. The women have the same rights as men and they are loyal to their husbands.
4. Men and women do not wear the robes and clokes all the time, it is only on the Sabbath and religious days, as to where most Americans picture Muslims wearing white robes carrying around an AK-47's.
I just thought Islamic culture was about men being more dominant. It may be like that in the Middle East, but in the US it is about compassion for religion, not dominance. | | | 4 | 1/17/2010 5:44 PM | examm. ok so one of the quotes im doing is from allegory of the cave. i need to find more symbolism other than the reason the person came from the light and came back to the dark. anybody wanna help me out here?? im having some issues.
| | | 10 | 1/17/2010 11:39 AM | we sin. So because we are seperated from God, we have the choice to do wrong, which therefore makes us feel guilty, therefore we sin. Have we not been given a choice in the first place, we would not have sined and felt guilty. But if choice and sin are the same thing then don't we all sin because we all constantly have the free will to choose.?? Once you choose to do wrong, you sin.?? so therefore when you make a choice it either leads you to God or away from God. But what about the people who don't know the difference between good and bad.?? the ones who are not able to make choices for themselves.?? how do they choose their relationship with God.?? any help.?? | | | 8 | 1/17/2010 11:25 AM | Princess and the Frog Before I start, may I say that if you want to see a good movie, see this one. Simply awesome
Anyways, first black princess. Well, not technically a princess, but first Disney, black princess. To anyone who has seen the movie (Im not gonna spoil anything if you haven't), it mentions what life was like if you were black way back when in America. This movie takes place in New Orleans, btw. I find that Disney has been addressing many different backgrounds and stereotypes and such, but in a subtle and well-meaning way.
See the movie and tell me what you think | | | 3 | 1/14/2010 9:20 AM | Mid Term Exam Topic So, I just thought I would post my thoughts on a potential idea for the exam. One of the biggest questions of Western Civilization has always been that of truth in the world. We as humans are constantly questioning what is out there in the afterlife, or what religion is right, or dozens of other questions of similar ilk. What these questions all really boil down to is a matter of truth. What is truth? Not just, what is THE truth, but what truth is. Is truth what is actually occurring? Or is truth what everyone perceives as true? I, of course, have no idea the answer to said questions, but these are the questions being asked in Western literature.
Here's the quotes I believe I will use when attempting to address this issue:
"And if he were forced to deliver his opinion again, touching the shadows aforesaid, and to enter the lists against those who had always been prisoners, while his sight continued to dim and his eyes unsteady, - and if this process of initiations lasted a considerable time, - would he not be made a laughingstock, and would it not be said of him, that he had gone up only to come back again with his eyesight destroyed, and that is was not worth the while even to attempt the ascent?
"Pilate saith unto him, What is truth ?"
"The mind is its own place, and in itself
Can make a heav'n of hell, a hell of heav'n. " | | | 0 | 1/10/2010 2:21 PM | quote #2. i was wondering if anybody could help me find some themes of the author in this quote. i figured out all my other themes, excpet this one. and im struggling with this a bit. please help?? | | | 0 | 1/10/2010 2:20 PM | dante quote. one of my quotes from dante i compelled to say the happenings in the world would be unknown. but it was comparing to those who fail to choose. im a little confused on how i could change this around to make sense.. help?? | | | 8 | 1/10/2010 10:37 AM | Should Muslims apologize for 9/11? When the Christian man, in 30 Days, comes to Dearborn and starts living with the Muslims, he becomes more comfortable with the family as people, but does not respect the religion yet. One day he, his host family, and some family friends were all having a get together before, I think, the third prayer of the day. The Christian brings up 9/11 and states that his host family and all other muslims have a responsibility to apologize for the actions of their fellow Muslim terrorists. The host family quickly fights back and says that they are not terrorists therefore they have no relativity with the Muslim Terrorists, who apparently kill innocent people in love of Islamic culture. They also snap back that Christians should apologize for Eric Rudolphs attempts to blow up the Olympics in the name of the Christian God. The Christian man does not agree, because he thinks all terrorists are Muslim; which they are in the eyes of Americans. But americans are terrorists too. The Uni-Bomber, serial killers, Nazis, and Modern War Guerillas are all terrorists as well as the Muslim terrorists from 9/11. So do you think Muslims should establish that they are not terrorists by apologizing to America like the Christian man does? | | | 6 | 1/10/2010 10:32 AM | Learning about other Religions I find it very unfortunate that many believe becoming informed about other religions will somehow be a slap in the face to the God of their choice. Like the guy in the 30 Days episode, at first he was hesitant to do or learn anything about Islam because he thought he was turning his back on Christ. I think that even in the most devout of any religion, there is always doubt, and learning about other religions could show people that their faith of choice may be in some way flawed or at least not as convincing as others. But what I find often to be the case is that those who embrace the faith of another often find themselves more firmly believing of their own choice. | | | 2 | 1/3/2010 12:34 PM | Big Mac say what!? We talked about in class how the west is introducing things like Mcdonalds and other fast food chains, and advertising products suck as coca-cola before they even come out to get citizens of other countries worked up and excited to go buy it when it comes out. Its kind of like when people get all excited over a new movie like New Moon, where people are all over excited buyiong their tickets three months in advance. But the fast food chains we are introducing to people in other countries such as China, is making the sumo wrestlers look a little slim. Then going and calling diabetes, and obeisity "Western Diseases"?? Ok i can see where they get it from, but we don't go calling H1N1 the mexican farmer massacre. I mean really. we introduce fast food chains for economic reasons, not to cause an extra duty scale to be produced in every country and city possible. The people have their own minds, they also have choice. They can choose to eat the food and get fat, or they can choose to eat what they've always eaten and get on with their life. | | | 2 | 1/3/2010 12:18 PM | love test In class we came to the conclusion that love is meaningless without being tested. Meaningful love with god is no free will. meaningless love with him is proof, purpose, human, reason, will, and responsibilty. It is also sin. so what is meaningful love with humans, like marries couples and couples?? doing what the other tells you and following each other like puppy dogs?? meaningless love is a little more predictable. cheating, lying, booty calls, etc. but what gets tested in love when two are joined in matrimony?? i mean besides faith. whats the ultimate test?? there isn't one. so does this mean its meaningless love being declared?? i could see how the females test could be going through all the pre wedding stress and geting stuck with her mom until the wedding date stuck with all the planning. but what bout the guy?? | | | 3 | 1/3/2010 12:04 PM | satan=love?? "I hate to destroy what i love."
Satan loves us!? well, this actually doesn't shock me.. well now. It all makes sense. Satan tempts us, because he wants us to come to his kingdom in Hell. This is because he loves us and doesnt want us to go to Gods kingdom. I think he thinks if he was miserable there, then we would be too. He's not looking for servants, he's looking for friends. Hes not mean, i think hes just lonely. | | | 6 | 1/2/2010 11:27 PM | I've been thinking... So, i was thinking about the video we watched and how when they had their little group bible study, there were various hints that everyone in the group was asking the atheist lady questions pertaining to whether or not she felt she could ever come back to christianity again. this kind of bothered me and i thought about why, throughout history, christians have repeatedly tried to convert people. it gives them this reputation that says they don't accept anyone for what they are. but when looking at it, converting people is part of their religion. they're always told to "spread the word of god". but it really only makes them come off as pushy. i think other religions are more accepted throughout the public because they keep to themselves rather than trying to convert the world. | | | 0 | 12/28/2009 10:40 PM | I Got AQuestion?? Hey Good and Relaxed People!!
I was checking to see if Mr Chiz graded our papers....(as of 10:37, Dec 28, 2009, that is a NO)
and I noticeed some groups, there were us, and others then there were....the Chiz Web Owners..(cue dramatic music) so, are they the school board? i think so, but of course, we can't look!
Gimmie your thoughts, and maybe a theory...we can roll with who it could be, like....ghosts, or Chiz's cats whom he thinks are dumb, but our so smart, THEY really own the site!!
Happy New Year!
Sleeping Thinker | | | 0 | 12/20/2009 5:13 PM | love and hate So Satan said there is no difference between love and hate. this is because when god loved him he woed. If God hated him, he still would've woed. I think this is true for atheists as well. because they hate god and dont like the fact that he loves them. but to despise themselves if he hated them they wouldnt be exactly happy because God wouldve won the battle by giving them what they "wanted" make sense?? | | | 4 | 12/13/2009 10:52 PM | Existentialism Found this on Youtube, it's a short stop-animation film, and it's supposed to be about existentialism. I tried understanding it but failed. All I could get was that it made no sense and through that it was already on it's way to a true existentialist story.
Any thoughts guys?
Click on the video titled 'Madame Tulti-Pulti' http://www.youtube.com/ytscreeningroom | | | 9 | 12/13/2009 4:13 PM | 30 days as a muslim Just a thread for us to post feedback on the video
Not long after 9/11 my dad had me listen to a Muslim woman interviewed on a Christian radio station, it covered most of what was covered on the radio station. It was interesting to see how they were alike.
I could understand how he had a difficulty grasping the concept of the two gods being the same one God, and was surprised that he was so opened minded about it. Actually I was surprised how open he was about everything, since they brought him from an area where they don't talk about things like that as much. At least I know they don't where I visit down south. | | | 14 | 12/13/2009 10:57 AM | what happens to animals? so reading some of the other posts something dawned on me. what happens to animls when they die? if only those who believe in God go to heaven, do animals go to hell? no one can tell them about God, and it's not like they can read the bible so how could they believe in God if they have never heard of God? or do we asssume that the animals do know about God and can choose to believe in God? or do the rules simply not apply to animals as they do humans? | | | 11 | 12/13/2009 10:04 AM | An Interesting Discovery I got curious about this whole god thing and decided to google how many people god has killed vs. satan. the numbers are pretty concerning, and from what i read, are taken directly form the bible. on one page, the person doing the research came up with a number close to 2.3 million. and this wasn't even counting all the people killed in noah's flood, sodom and gomorrah, the plagues, and so on. they only counted killings where specific numbers are given. but, after a while, they decided to make a rough estimate and include all of these killings as well. the number was 33 million, give or take a few million. and after all of this, how many would you say satan killed? they came up with 10. this includes job's family, which, god did infact share responsibility for because he gave satan permission.

| | | 5 | 12/6/2009 1:52 AM | Exam Questions/Discussions I completely forgot what the message behind allegory of the cave was?
And I figured we all had questions about the exam so I decided to start this discussion. Pretty sure I don't get a lot of the material on the exam and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has questions? | | | 13 | 11/29/2009 1:43 AM | Morals without Religion? In the movie 30 Days, I remember the Christian father had a hard time trying to accept how on earth somebody could teach their children morals without a religion. I can understand how he feels a religion is important for morals, seeing as how he is a very religious person himself, but... what if we look at this from an Atheist point of view?
Assuming there is no God, we could deduct that the bible is all a bunch of poppycock written by a bunch of intelligent men, but for that matter, is all either made up or altered to make historical events seem more supernatural than they really were.
Now, this sheds a completely different light on the idea of morals. We are now assuming that people CREATED morals themselves, so now there is no problem with what we teach our children, because if there is no god and humans created morals, then in theory we can teach our children without the use of religion since it is all human-based anyway..... Right? | | | 3 | 11/22/2009 6:19 PM | What does the Allegory of Cave and Plato have to do with modern film? Plato basically, metaphorically, talked about people in a cave that are bonded from birth so that they only see straight and cannot turn their heads or see around. They only see shadows of the others around and continue with their day in and out. Then towards the end he says something along the lines of how you can't just strain the persons neck and throw them out in the light. So I was thinking that maybe that you can't just make movies that are the same as all the others. Thats why there are different genres of films. And if you throw a bunch of ideas out there you won't have a good film in the end. So i dont know if this relates to Plato's Allegory of the Cave of if affected.
Please share your ideas or comment and fix my ideas. | | | 14 | 11/22/2009 12:43 PM | Atheist "churches" and tax rebates In the 30 days movie, when they were at the "atheist church," someone said something along the lines of, we were denied getting tax rebates by the government for money donated to our "church."
Personally, I don't think this gathering of atheists fits any reasonable definition of church, and cannot be included in the same categories. | | | 2 | 11/22/2009 12:25 PM | From What Mr. Chisnell Said. Mr Chisnell brought up yesterday, something that is in the course pack, in class. He said that Jesus doesn't call Himself any of the names given in the course pack. I was wondering if Mr.Chisnell meant that Jesus hadn't directly or indirectly said that He was any of those names. If Mr. Chisnell meant that He hadn't done that directly then I can not say anything. But if he was talking about Jesus at any time, indirectly calling Himself that, then there are a few verses I would like to point out.
He indirectly calls Himself the Messiah.
John 4:25-26
The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."
And Lord.
John 13:13-14
"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet." | | | 1 | 11/22/2009 11:54 AM | the video Am I allowed to talk about the video we watched because i feel like i hear this argument of athiest vs. believers all the time. I feel as though christians come accross as so bias and closed minded but i also feel like that just gives believers a wrong name. Why wouldn't somebody be athiest after hearing a christian rant about how everybody is going to hell if they don't accept god? It seems like more sense to be a civilized athiest then a one sided christian. No offense should be taken because i consider myself a libral christian. | | | 10 | 11/22/2009 11:03 AM | regarding the video.. we were asked what sort of values/morals non-christian parents teach to their children and I thought of a few things:
The basics like eating, brushing teeth, driving, riding a bike, doing hair, how to speak, manners, whats right and wrong (hitting, stealing, spitting?, swearing..etc)
I enjoyed the video because it gives Christians an atheist's view of Christians/Christianity, like how unwelcoming Christians can appear to be. It baffled me how bewildered the Christian dad was about what the atheist's taught their children. I really enjoyed how the Christian mother found common ground with the atheist's in the fact she couldn't imagine standing for something you don't really believe in. | | | 1 | 11/18/2009 9:32 AM | hahaha OOOPS! So I figured I would do some posting during second hour and I didn't realize I was on Mr. Chisnell's user name...soo uh yeah just ignore that until he gets back to fix it haha. embarassing... | | | 10 | 11/16/2009 1:22 PM | Religion--The source of all evil? I had an interesting conversation with my mom about a friend of ours who believes that religion--or for that matter, the human idea of religion is the source of wars and evil.
I know I dumbed it down, I didn't rephrase it very good but in a way I feel that what he's saying makes a lot of sense. Over the years a lot of the huge wars that have come upon us have been due to religion differences. Like the war in the Middle East. I mean, that's been going on for EVER all because of religious beliefs. A lot of people were killed, and empires/cultures destroyed because of differing beliefs. For example, conquistadors would often convert natives to Catholicism. And even today I find that religious beliefs, rather than bring people together, push them apart. A lot of times people who are very religious don't mingle with those who are not. And of course, let's not forget events like 9/11.
The idea is not that gods cause wars, it's that people's opinions on gods, religions, and beliefs are the problem behind most battles.
So In a sense, he's saying that if there was never religion, gods or beliefs of any sort, we could have avoided a lot of conflicts. He's a proffessor so I'm sure he'd explain it all better than me but what do you guys think? | | | 4 | 11/15/2009 1:58 PM | Discussion Points for Our Exam I thought it would be good if we had one board where we could discuss everything that would be on the exam. So let's dive in shall we?
First I thought I would dive into the most difficult point. How is Miley Ray Cyrus related to existentialism?
This is what I came up with. How is it that a girl with very limited talent, a moderately (at best) level of attractiveness, and a contract from Disney could become one of the most well known names in the United States. If we look back in history, we can see a trend of this type of popular culture over the last 30 or so years. The music industry either picks a pretty face and gives it talent, or finds talent and gives it a pretty face. Now this worked pretty well early on (see early Britney Spears), however the industry soon realized it could make much more money if they make the women they use more sexually explicit. Clearly America is not all that opposed to this concept because we allow ourselves to do it over and over. Then, Disney decides that they would like to try their hands at this game. Disney, long known for being the younger-age appropriate film and television company, launched a show about a young girl with seemingly with some type of schizophrenia, and thus the monstrosity of Hannah Montana/Miley Ray Cyrus was born. But things only got worse from their. I think many people know about the Teen Choice Awards performance fiasco. The girl danced on top of an ice cream cart with a pole on it. Many complained that it was highly suggestive and inappropriate. Meanwhile, Disney distanced itself from the performance to avoid soiling its "good" image. Here's where we get into the existentialism. The backlash from that performance actually made this horrid excuse for a musician MORE FAMOUS. In the good old days, if someone did something controversial, they were either stoned or in some other way silenced. But now, people do things we don't like, and it generates more fame for them and boosts their careers (think about the guy who claimed his kid was trapped in a weather balloon. Bet you did know he wanted his own show and even record his own theme songs before that incident). All this just goes to show how absurd the world of popular music and film is. We fill it with people we love to hate, and those who we would rather stop performing, and yet these people make more money than nearly anyone else on the planet. Thus, we are alienated from our own entertainment industry, alienated from our friends because they won't stop talking about these artists we hate, and alienated from society because we appear as outcasts because we don't want to listen to trashy music.
I apologize to all fans of Miley Cyrus. I'm sure there are redeeming qualities of her music, somewhere. But I believe I've explained quite nicely how existential her career is. | | | 6 | 11/8/2009 6:35 PM | Killing Cats I thought Mr. Chisnell's version of the origins of Halloween was quite frightnening. The fact that people are that duranged scares me. But then again, I can't judge people based on their beliefs...but I will anyways. Those people are freaks! Why would you kill cats, snakes, and frogs by throwing them in a pit of fire? What does that accomplish? You cant honestly believe that Samhuim or whatever carries his evil spirtits through annimals. But without getting off topic, I have a question; What religion were the people that started their tradition of dancing around fires, dressing children up to scare off the demons, and going around house to house to ask for kindling to keep the fires going to burn more animals? I think everything these people did and still do are crazy and were way too easily manipulated as children. | | | 16 | 11/8/2009 6:18 PM | Thoughts and Feelings- The Exlporation of Heaven and Hell Classmates, Uryguayans, Colombians, and Senor Chisnell,
I would love to start the discussion of where aor heaven and hell concept started! I voted totally left field, but I am still in for the topic, because heaven and hell, what we know of them, that is, play in HEAVY undertones of most of our behavior, thougths, feelings, ect.
I feel that the class is going to bop me for this, but...
Why heaven and hell? Why now? Can we handle the topic?
Scare me with these replies people, I gotta know!
Sleeping Thinker | | | 2 | 11/8/2009 11:25 AM | Halloween So I was thinking about the Halloween discussion we had, and how it all came to be. I understand how Christians are to believe that they have to spread the word of God, it's part of how their system works. But did God ever say to do this by force? Was there any indication to this? Because I feel like throughout history Christians have forcefully pressed their beliefs on other religious groups. Is that not against the bible? Or is there just no say as to how they're supposed to go about it all...
| | | 2 | 11/8/2009 10:40 AM | God=Right.
God=Right.
Plado raised the question:
Is God good because he chooses good things to do.??
or
Are the things good because God chooses them.??
I feel people think the things are good just because God chose them and they think god is good just because he's God and its what they were taught to believe. They say if you exist you must be good because you are part of the creation and therefore god created you. But evil is the province of conscious beings who posses free will. so if you choose consciously to turn away from God and creation willingly you are evil. but how do you know you consciously chose to do so.?? and who decides this.?? | | | 5 | 11/8/2009 9:50 AM | no God.?? Most people don"t believe in God because he hasn't come to them yet. " I don't believe what i can't see". This is kind of where i am. How do we know there is really a God. because it is said that he created the earth and all living things. so where did he come from.?? the stories musn't be true because God didn't just poof out of nowhere. I don't want to offend anyone, but why spend my time believing in a religion and a God that has no proof to show me of hhis existence and how he came about and was made.. its just all too confusing i think. any help.?? | | | 4 | 11/8/2009 9:40 AM | is it really him.?? There is nothing physically we can do to get close to god. we could build a tower that goes beyond the sky and still be just as far away from him as if we were still flat on the ground. we have to listen to him and be good to be close to god. but how do we know what he really wants.?? or if the bible really is his rules and stories.?? how can we trust someone or something that we know really nothing about except for what people or pastors over the years have told us.? how do we know its not just the pastor trying to shove his beliefs into our head.?? | | | 0 | 11/3/2009 10:59 AM | secret message.?? Ok so God punished those men for building the tower by giving them different languages. By having different languages they became seperated. seperated from eacvh other and from god still. Existentialism says we will be seperate from everything, including God. So by giving them different languages was God telling them they are not able to be close to him so they should become existentialists.?? Because this is what i am taking from this. does anyone else care to explain their theories.?? | | | 10 | 11/1/2009 11:39 AM | the tree (i think i got it) after some insight, and re-reading, i came to the conclusion that literature and stories in themselves are driven forward by conflict. without conflict, there would be no story of adam and eve worth telling. i feel like god created free will and put the tree there in order to create a story of morality and faith. | | | 11 | 10/31/2009 4:54 PM | Purpose of Life So, we never discussed this but talking so much about religion and stuff got me thinking of a couple things.
I know that a lot of people are bent on trying to figure out what the purpose of life is. Many religions and theories say different things, but I think... WHY DOES IT MATTER?
I understand the reason behind wanting to know, wanting to learn. Many people think that we MUST have a purpose, our lives are so insignificant and we don't play that big a role in our environment--After all, there weren't always humans. (according to science at least).
But in reality, why do we care so much about what the truth is?
For example. Let's say that a group of scientists one day found a way to prove that our purpose in life was to never exist. We were some giant fluke in society. In fact, we are not just a fluke but our existence is harming the world, we are like parasites who are slowly poisoning the natural flow of things.
So would we all suddenly commit mass suicide? Would we all just say: OH OK! I guess that makes sense. Now that we got a purpose and all, we have nothing more to do than to follow it. Clearly.
Obviously, that's not going to happen. So why do we care so much if eventually, not everyone is even going to follow the 'truth'. Why are we so bent on this if our own morals and ideals are probably not going to be changed by something as such?
Thoughts, comments, complaints? | | | 13 | 10/20/2009 8:54 AM | Pleasure vs. Pain Okay though most people prefer pleasure over pain, what about those who find pleasure in pain? I understand the whole concept, that if one person inflicts pain onto one person eventually they receive pain, it's sort of like a karma thing. But what I dont understand is, who's to say pain isn't a bad thing, people always say "what don't kill you, can only make you stronger?"
So if we live in a world where it is survival of the fittest why not use pain to toughen everybody up? | | | 6 | 10/20/2009 8:49 AM | Odd Happenings There are a few things in this world that are rather mysterious and thought provoking. I think these are, to be sure:
The top of mount Zion, where Moses went up into the flames of God to talk with him, has massive scorch marks all over the top.
In Egypt, one layer of rock is burned and contains igneous rocks. This layer occurs at around the same time that, according to the Bible historically, fire rained down upon Egypt when the slaves weren't allowed to leave.
These are just a few, and these are true, as well. I'm sure there's more. I'd just like to know what you guys thought about this | | | 18 | 10/18/2009 5:51 PM | Scoring. Ok so friday at the end of class Mr.Chiz was explaining something, and threw in the fact that guys think they can score with women who are vulnerable or in a sensitive state, and we didn't really have alot of time to discuss this in class so im going to finish on here.
I think that Guys who are conceited think they can score with any girl.. no offense. But i believe it is true, that guys think if girls aren't in the right state of mind, and its not just with emotional stuff it goes for drunk tipsy girls or girls who have had alot of drugs or whatever, they can score with them because they are "easy". But not all guys do that. There are guys I have to say that would never take advantage of a girl when she's not in the right state of mind or ever. but there are those jerks out there who do. And i do believe K is one of those men.. just saying.
Feel free to debate this issue :). | | | 6 | 10/17/2009 3:35 PM | Mythology and Fact... So I wanted to bring this up cause I've always pondered this. Beforehand though, I wanna warn you that this DOES have to do with religion so if you are easily offended please don't read, and if you're replying, please be respectful to others' opinions.
Anywhoosies, I wanted to bring up the question of what exactly makes something a myth, and something... fact. If you can remember, the Greeks and Romans were a polytheistic group, they believed in many gods and often these gods would not only interact with the human world openly, but would take on human forms and control things such as tornadoes, earthquakes and lightning in their wrath.
My initial question, however, was when exactly did these become myths? And not religion? When people stopped believing in them? When we could use science to prove that earth quakes aren't caused by giant beings?
But more importantly, what differentiates Greek Mythology from Christianity, or Judaism, or any other religions of the world? Why is it that some religions are seen as a belief, while others are now mere stories used for entertainment? | | | 12 | 10/11/2009 10:18 AM | What would you do about the slave tomatoes?
Mr. Chiz raised an interesting question about the tomato slaves today in class. Would you be responsible for the tomato slave more so than when you just bought the slave tomatoes on your burger from McDonald's?
I think that Its 50/50. Part of the responsibility does sort of go to you simply because you were sought out for help. The other part is the slave's. I think that if you decide that America is a better place to be and you pack up leave and go there and are turned into a slave, part of that is your fault. I don't mean to be cruel or anything, but nobody forced them into thinking America was a land of fredom and opportunity, They decided to...
I dont want to ramble....
Any thoughts? | | | 13 | 10/11/2009 10:10 AM | Drowning Boy.. again. Ok so the other day..and the week before that we we're discussing in class random things, and Mr.Chiz felt the need to use the example of the drowning boy not once..but twice. .. poor little boy, you really should learn how to swimm so Mr. Chiz stops picking on you..
Anyways, the new analogy came up about the boy who was drowning and the idiot lifeguard who didn't jump in because he wanted a refill, and you left standing there with the ultimate decision. GET UR ASS IN THE WATER AND SAVE THAT CHILD.!! This should be your reaction thought. But instead you are left standing there debating what you should do. YOU IDIOT. But let's just say you don't jump in. Are you responsible for this little boy who sadly drowned right in front of your face because YOU did NOTHING.?! Under the Law: No, it was the lifeguards duty to save that boy, but instead of having his lemonade refill he's sitting in a jail cell wondering if the soap dropping stories really do happen in jail in reality. poor guy didn't win either way. But under the law: Hell Yes You Are Guilty.!! You stood there and watcheda poor little boy drown because it wasn't your job to save him. so now you have to live with that for the rest of your life because you stood there while that little boy looked you in the eyes begging for help and you just stood there and watched him die. How dare you.
Anyone.?? agree/disagree. please :). | | | 17 | 10/7/2009 9:18 PM | The Definition of "Reasonable" I'm really suprised at how difficult it is to define this. If there are as many definitions of reasonable as there are people, what honestly is reasonable? Are we all just floating around demanding and forcing our own twisted "reason" on others? | | | 10 | 10/3/2009 6:45 PM | En Soi and Pour Soi together? So I was thinking about en soi and pour soi. and I was just wondering is there a possibility that a person can be both en soi and pour soi? I was looking in the course pack that Mr. Chisnell gave us, and this is what I thought when I read the en soi and pour soi part.
People have purpose in life. They also take actions (the pour soi part). But people can be dependent on others(the en soi part) but they can pick which areas that they want to be dependent in. They can happen at the same time. Can't it? | | | 13 | 10/3/2009 3:30 PM | I Love My Mom Today Mr. Chiz enlightened us on the 'laborious yet brief' summary of Oedipus. It was certainly an interesting presentation, but what had me even more curious, was this new idea that all men are in a way attracted or attached emotionally to their mothers.
I remember watching a video in Sociology where they tested this theory. They had several mothers and their babies come in to the facility, there they were instructed to play with their children as they normally would (peekaboo, tickling etc.) for about five minutes. Afterwards, the mothers would stop what they were doing, and would just stand staring blankly at their babies.
The study showed that when mothers did this to their baby boys, they would start to become desperate. At first, they were confused, they would try to gain their mother's attention, they would start to grow restless at the lack of attention, and finally, would start crying or throwing tantrums over their still mothers.
The girls however, would find an interest elswhere. They too would act confused as well, but instead of throwing fits, they would occupy themeselves with something else, staring at the ceeiling, looking about them, and staying calm about the whole situation.
So do you think that there is some realtionship between Oedipus and this experiment? Do you guys think that guys are attatched more to their mothers than girls are? And therefore, are girls more attached to their dads, or is this just proving that girls have stronger emotional stability? | | | 5 | 10/2/2009 10:27 PM | Tomato Slaves... Again I was just thinking about the Tomato Slaves again. I know, I know, we've visited this topic a million times, but I just needed to say something.
Why is it, that when a teacher brings up a touchy subject like slavery or something of the sort, we're all compelled to suddenly act like we care loads about it?
I mean, I understand that some people might, but there always seems to be this overwhelming agreement that this is wrong or that that is wrong, or that oh! We must do everything to stop such injustice.
But then we go home and keep doing the same things.
For example. There are tons of underpaid Chinese workers in factories. Conditions are nasty, and a lot of times they end up getting sick because of these or injured from unsafe equipment. Yet they're the leading manufacturer of almost all our products. So tomato slaves suddenly make us all care, but despite the many stories of Chinese factory workers and child labor, we still buy products that are made in China and similar countries... HAPPILY.
And what about McDonalds, Taco Bell, KFC? I mean, it's been proven millions of times that their food is harmful to our bodies. That it's not safe. That--in short--their food can barely be qualified as food. And yet we KEEP ON EATING IT. Everyday. Most of us go out to lunch and chow down on something that just barely skims the qualifications for meat.
So then, why do we suddenly care so much about slave tomatoes? Why do we all make fun of fast food restaurants when asked about them?
Are we all hypocrites, or is there something else behind all of this? | | | 9 | 10/2/2009 6:42 PM | Mindless Robots..who knows.?? Back in class a few weeks ago we touched upon a debate that i havn't really read anything about on here. It was about us as humans, really being robots. I think the question was something like this:
How do I know I am really me and all the choices I make are mine, and im not really just some mindless robot being controlled to think and do what someone programmed me to.??
Well here's my answer. In society there are rules and Laws and a bunch of other non sense we are supposed to follow. But not everyone does. I believe we are who we are, and i believe the choices we make in life are ours too.
So here is my theory on this part: If we are really robots being controlled.. well who's to say the person controlling us isn't being controlled.?? And if they are not, why are they the only person not being programmed and controlled. What kind of crap is that.?? Where does this "controller" get their ideas, if everything in society is being controlled.?? there's nothing to run off of to create any flippin ideas.!! It's a bunch of non sense if you ask me.
I guess what I'm trying to say is we don't really know whether or not we are being controlled or programmed, or whatever.
I think we are all just people, being ourselves, trying to make it through life, and we are the ones running our society, building it off the foundation of all of our own ideas and creations put together.
The End.
