PETA ADS
PETA
The first question you have to ask yourself is what is the definition of effective? To be effective in the marketing world you must grab the people's attention you want. PETA's main goal is obviously to raise awareness to animal cruelty, but doesnt this help? If someone is scrolling along the internet, maybe a picture of an elephant or animal may not grab someone's attention. In my opinion if a famous actor/ model was posing for an ad, I would definetly stop and give it look. Someone may see this ad and read about it due to the famous actor/ model supporting it. This link shows how marketers have been hiring actors, artists for years to promote products and how it works. http://marketing.blogs.ie.edu/archives/2007/03/celebrities_bas.php If my favorte athlete or artist or in this case an attractive actress was advertising a group I would take extreme measures to learn more about this group due to my curosity of why the person is advertising about it. Overall I do believe this is effective because it grabs people's attention who may not really care if there was a picture of a poor little animal. I do understand why people believe PETA is not advertising in a well mannered way, but in my opion this way of advertising is very effective.

PETA I believe that this PETA add is, in fact, effective in grabbing peoples attention with out doubt. However, the problem, ofcourse, is wether it supports its intensions or not. I personally also believe it is an effective way to get people thinking about the elephants. It may not initially get people to say "wow! I want to go out and save elephants.", but it does grab your attention right away. With your attention in the hands of this add you would then read it and therefor start to ponder the message. Some may argue that it only grabs the attention of males. I would respectfully disagree, i believe that although they may not physically be attracted to this add, females are always comparing themselves to other females(models and actresses especially). http://www.examiner.com/article/woman-to-woman-comparing-oneself-to-other-women this article will display my argument.

PETA I believe the ad shows no relation to protecting elephants. It is more to show off the model and make her more appealing. A woman in shakles has nothing to do with the violence with elephants. The real meaning of the ad is in extremely small print. This gives no recognition to the subject. The ad looks like it could be in a playboy magazine. The hunters behind the model look like raunchy men that like to look at porn and are into S and M. There are no elephants, tusks, ivory, or anything in relation to these magnificent creatures. The violence portrayed is men being superior to women and having them be sex slaves.

PETA I believe this PETA add is not effective in what it was intensionally trying to support. Honestly, when I first saw this, I thought it was an advertisement for an adult film of some sort. The first things you see are the woman, who is chained up with rips in the little amount of clothing she has on, and the words, "Shackled, beaten, and abused" which could be taken as an erotic reference instead of an ad for the stop to cruelty on elephants. That is also the reason it might avert some, such as women, children, and the elderly.
The text that said, "Stop cruelty to elephants" was small and harder to read which, in a way, makes them seem as if they are trying to keep it out of sight in some way. Even if that text was larger and easier to read, it might be taken as an insult to the woman modeling for this PETA ad. Both facts on this un-effective ad do not bode well for PETA's cause.
To continue, the woman is supposed to be seen as the elephant getting abused by the two shirt-less men in the background, but that would never be the first thing that'd come to mind when seeing this ad. They could've put the woman caring for a wounded baby or adult elephant. A sympathetic approach and the attractive woman would still be present in it, as she might have wished, while getting more posative and productive attention to their cause and organization of PETA.

PETA I do think they are effective to certain demographics. It might be offensive or degrading to women but it may appeal to men and make them want to see more. I think in this case it's offensive to females but in other cases it could capture a woman's attention if it had a strong, powerful, or influential female such as Oprah or Michelle Obama. PETA could've taken a different approach, but I'm sure they've had ads that have been passed by because they didn't capture someone's attention by having an appealing spectacle or half naked model, so the method may be extreme but it has captured all of our attention and caused this debate. Therefore it did what an ad is supposed to do.

PETA ad Effectiveness
In my opinion this PETA ad is an effective ad but not to say that I believe it to be an appropriate ad. An ad is meant to get ones desired point across in this case being to stop the cruelty to elephants. Though this ad uses some controversial and for some people very disrespectful/offensive material it still does what it is designed to do. All ads have a specific audience that they are trying to reach and are then structured around that audience as to be the most effective that it can be. Being the way this ad is structured with the woman having a large percentage of the ad displaying her, the audience that this ad would easily bring in would be many men who would be drawn in by the underdressed actress and those who are shocked by the somewhat offensive nature of the ad. At this point those who were now looking at the ad would proceed to read what this ad could possibly be for. Even though men may be looking at the woman they would still at some point look to see what the ad was for because most people wouldn’t just look at her and turn the page or scroll through the rest of the article, curiosity would push them to find out the basis of the ad. Whatever reason weather the offensiveness or the actress on it people would be curious what the ad was for, proceed to read the meaning and then the point of the ad would be realized. Though this ad may not be full of information that grabs the attention of a viewer it would still get its point across. An example of like advertising is political lawn signs. Based on the information on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawn_sign by Mel Khan, a political scientist you can like the name recognition created by the signs to the information of this PETA ad getting to its viewers, even if it doesn’t compel someone to start a campaign to save the elephants the information would still have been read and at least subconsciously remembered.

Peta Ad In my opinion, I believe this ad is just an ad. An ad brings attention to the audience, some negative and some positive. However still attention. Any ad you look at today is to premote the product. As a product i mean, donating for homeless, animal sheltors, shopping for Drinks, food, or vehicles. As for an example, the bud light commercials. These ads bring humor and entertainment to show how much you can have fun while drinking their product. Such fun as having a party everytime you crack open the lid. Another example is the Coca Cola commercials with the polar bears. This ad was to promote the Coca Cola product to the viewers. These ads are only trying to grab attention, and i believe this PETA ad did well at that. It brought attention to both sides of men, or women.

Argumentation
This PETA ad is supposed to be an ad to stop the cruelty of elephants… quite frankly; this doesn’t look like an ad that supports anything but a sexual looking woman that is barely clothed. Like my classmates, I agree that this ad is not effective in making a person want to help stop the cruelty of elephants. The ad may grasp the reader’s attention, but only because there is a half-naked woman in the ad. I also agree with the point Anisa brought up, that the ad is somewhat sexist. Instead of the ad fully advertising the point, it is mainly focused on the woman. Personally with me being a woman myself, I look at that ad and take offence to that. I understand the fact that PETA wants their ads to be read, but there are other ways of capturing people’s attention. For example the ASPCA advertisements against animal cruelty I personally think are much more effective than this PETA ad. http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=sarah+mclachlan+advertisement&qpvt=sarah+mclachlan+advertisement&FORM=VDRE this in link it shows the many ads that the ASPCA have released with Sarah Mclachlan. All in all, I believe that PETA stands for a good cause but isn’t advertising it in the right way and if they could just take a different approach in their ads they would be more successful at fulfilling their goal of stopping cruelty of elephants.

PETA ads I agree with Anisa when she said that the ad is a bit sexist. This ad would be efficient with grabbing men's attention but not everyone's attention and that should be the main goal. This ad failed at grabbing attentions for the right reasons. Yes, the ad grabbed attentions but it focused more on the female than the actual issue. http://www.sodahead.com/entertainment/ This PETA ad grabs your attention with a cute dog and male which leads you to the saying, "If you wouldn't wear your dog... please don't wear any fur." This saying was written fairly big so you can see it. To have an effective ad, it shouldn't take a female with little clothes on in a sunlight. Even though sex sells, it's not the only way to grab someone's attention. If you succeed at grabbing someone's attention with focusing on the ACTUAL ISSUE, then in my opinion, you have an effective ad.

Argumentation In my opinion, the ad is only effective at getting the viewers attention. The idea behind the ad is right but the execution is very wrong. I believe the picture should not picture a woman in revealing clothes but a beaten elephant. I agree with my classmates that most guys will only be looking at the girl. Also I wonder why the creators of this ad wrote "Stop cruelty to elephants" so small. The main idea would be to stop cruelty for elephants so that should be the biggest part. If you took away the stop cruelty for elephants part or if some people overlook it, which will happen it basically looks like an add for an adult film or something! To me that is not okay at all. If an ad is about saving animals it should be truly made about the animals and not promoting the actress or actor in it. The PETA ad will get your attention at first and succeed in getting you to look at it but it is not effective because it doesn't make you want to contribute to the cause. A better example of a more effective PETA ad would be this one they used in an article on their website http://www.peta.org/features/uw-madison-cruelty.aspx. This ad is much more effective and you can't question the true meaning behind it. The creators show how they really care and want to help cats, by actually picturing cats. In the ad above their is no elephant shown and it also looks as if it promotes the famous girl instead of the real cause.

Arguementation I agree with Anisa. It does seem like this PETA ad and the many like it are in a more sexual nature to get the attention of people. And it is understandable of course, when men see a scantily dressed woman their attentions will be peeked. So in that idea, PETA ads do attract attention. But is it the right attention? Sure, people will see the ads, but will they see the real meaning behind the ads? Men will most likely only see the women, and women will most likely only be insulted by another woman exposing her body in an ad. So, the purpose for the ad has been defeated, it's just created a controversy that wasn't intended for. PETA wants people to help for the ethical treatment of animals, not to have the person in their ad be the main attention. So my answer would be, PETA ads are not effective, the entire idea of saving animals has been lost behind scandalous pictures, which though intended for a good reason, just take away from the real meaning for the ad and seem like a publicity stunt for actresses, actors, etc.

Argumentation
Honestly I believe the ad is a bit sexist. It focused more on the woman rather than the issue. I'm no feminist but I do believe things should be fair. Sex sells and PETA is ran by a group of women, it also directs more of its issues towards women and the actual ads are directed towards men. If a man were to see this ad he would be more focused on the female and not the actual issue at hand. There are other ways to get your message across. For example the humane society does a pretty good job of advertising their message http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBhIRKuyOOQ . They've captured the audience without affending anyone. I do expect more from PETA since the group is made by women and their audience is mostly women, I would hope their future ads are more focused on what they are trying to portray and not the intent to exploit women.
